For many people, the Covid-19 pandemic has caused significant stress and anxiety, and managing your mental health is an important part of persevering through these uncertain times. Whether it’s by phone call, FaceTime, or text message, finding a way to stay social and connected to others will curb feelings of isolation. Even something small, like a game of Scrabble or Chess played via phone app goes a long way to feeling more connected to those close to you.

For those looking for more than a way to stay in touch with friends and family: Find an online community to share your struggles with. It can be a powerful reminder that you’re not alone. Many others are also dealing with stress, anxiety, or loneliness. Finding a place to unselfconsciously vent your fears and anxieties unburdens our minds and allows us to look at potential positives.

Conversely, helping others cope with their stress also does wonders for our mental health as well. Reach out and offer support to those who may need it.

Maintain Healthy Habits

It’s important to stay disciplined and keep developing healthy habits. Poor diet, irregular sleep schedules, and consumption of alcohol will dysregulate your circadian rhythms and negatively affect your mental health. 

Although your gym may be closed, it’s still possible to get a workout in at home. Plenty of calisthenics routines can be done at home and furniture can be creatively repurposed for resistance training.

Though the temptation to watch TV and scroll through social media may be strong, spending too much time on them can have a negative effect. Whenever possible, try to practice or learn a new skill; something that will leave you with a feeling of accomplishment.

It’s also a good idea to get outside. Even a short walk around the block can greatly improve our spirits. As long as health authorities permit it, go for a nature walk or jog through the forest. The benefits of exercise are well-documented and can help those feeling isolated and lethargic.

Reach out to a mental health professional if your mental health is negatively affecting your daily life for several days or weeks. Check to see if your doctor’s office provides any tele-health options.
